Several weeks ago I promised to put up links to all five parts of my presentation on pseudo-Dionysian ontology, so here you go! The slide, which cannot be seen very well from the video, can be found here: http://d.pr/f/LAU9/1tD7w3Pe
Apostolic Johannite Church, Neoplatonism, Ontology, Pseudo-Dionysius
Do you see a fundamental contradiction between platonism & christianity? The scholar Niketas Siniossoglou feel that christian platonism is contradictory because of the fact that in christianity “the Fall” is only corrected by an outside God bestowing mercy on the human while in platonism the human by his own effort raises himself to the divine. So he say’s christians must deliberately misquote Plato etc to harmonize it with christian dogma..
I do not necessarily see a fundamental contradiction between Platonism and Christianity, though it may depend on which forms of Platonism and Christianity we’re talking about. I do, however, think that Siniossoglou may misunderstand some aspects of Platonism, and especially late, theurgic Platonism. Plato himself seem fairly clear that we are nothing without the Gods and that what we can do is basically nothing. In theurgic Platonism theurgy itself comes from the Gods and would otherwise be ineffective for salvation. Human magic or sorcery cannot do what theurgy does precisely because theurgy stems from the Gods and the others from us.
